Review:

When a website strikes upon you, you can almost instantly feel how tight it is. And I'm not just talking about decorative graphics, it's all in there - content, language, architecture and visual balance.

Jesse Bennett-Chamberlain's web site design is where my eyes expects the content where the middle column is.

Overall a nice and tidy web site with a good sense of typography, colors and subtle graphics. Sure, it does what it's supposed to and doesn't raise many eyebrows, but it also has that "something" over it that makes it special. It's always hard to pin-point the all the reasons behind, but that is one part of a web designers job, isn't it?

Thanks for the review David, good solid critique.

Marko... that's crazy you lived in Grimsby... you know what's even weirder though? I was in Croatia in 94.

I really liked the previous version of the site, and remember being surprised to find that it relied on tables for layout. Now that it's been redone, the code finally reflects the author's superb graphic talent. I like that he didn't go overboard with changes, but make things stand out a bit more.

Yes, I also agree that this is a very well done site. I love the giant laptop overlapping the header and content area! And colours are bright and clean.

Also nice to see another EE-powered website one here! Wahoo! Also, any reason why you only use sIFR on your blog, but not the rest of the site?

Aye. Very slick. Love the brand id also - fitting.

Nice 'powerful engine under the bonnet' also (yu know, the css). These guys 'av got skills. 'Double thumbs' from me.

I really like the simple yet strong layout.

The color scheme is excellent. The content is easy to read and well organized.

Only four tabs to choose from: that's a good idea.

Less is more, so they say, and this is a site that supports that old proverb.

The Play section is a savvy use of apparently personal content that I think will help to build rapport with potential customers by giving the website a human face and should go a long way to encourage people to use the contact form.

Good look and good functionality!

I was sceptical at first having linked to this sitewhile reading an article on a List Aprt. But I must say after having viewed the site , it is really deserving in talent of design and code. nice work.

Agree with everything that's been said. Looks great, feels good and has a tight design. My only issue is with the contact form: the error message text colour needs to be changed. It's currently white, which means that in order to see the message:

'Please make sure all fields are filled out correctly.

Edit your message or fill re-enter your information below.'

... I had to select the text itself or view source.

Thanks for all the kind words guys! I really didn't even expect to get posted onto this list... and when I did I was like "oh no... It's going to get ripped apart!"

Thanks for catching that error Greg... I had my css a little messed up and it wasn't showing the background colour in firefox. All is well now.

Great site from a great studio. Incredible redesign/realign/whatever. I've been working up a new design for my site...now I'm back to the drawing board.

Inspirational design 31three! Oh and, Jesse, if I end up taking that old house can you help me "realign" it? Just kidding, looks great! Peace.

It's nice, and defintely soothing. However I really hate the laptop in the corner. Seems tacky.

commentat 12:31 on 01 November 2005, Dave R wrote:

Glad someone else mentioned the laptop. Not good, makes them/him look like they sell computers. It's not very imaginative either.

However, not bad apart from that. Nice logo, neat layout.

The work in progress image link is a nice addition and fits in well.

Too many fonts for my liking, its bordering on inconsistency. check out the narrow font on the play page, the mix of sans-serif and serif on the home page.

Odd using Xhtml transitional rather than strict.

However, pleasing colours, looks like its well coded at a glance.

The typography is good (narrow type on play aside). The architecture and navigation are very good.

Why such heavy integration of Apple products/images? iBook, browser window with slight reflection, cinema displays, package box, etc...

Why when I am looking at an identity or brochure it is shown on a cinema display?

The print work is simply to small to show a client anything useful.

Overall the design is clean, but it feels very safe.

The ability to layer on top of gradients is very impressive and is something I am also trying to get my clients to buy into but they looked very washed when printed out where the client see them as worse. On the screen gradients work really well.

commentat 07:23 on 28 November 2005, Sean wrote:

@matt: Look closer. It's not an iBook, nor is it a Cinema Display. I think Jesse did a good job of finding slick looking, non-branded computer hardware in order to convey the message.

Simplicity, can sometimes be a best approach. And why not. What I dont like and probably dont understand is why half of site is eaten by iBook...
