Review:

The 9rules network is comming on nicely, and in order to "portalize" all sites and guide readers to the freshest content did a re-design of the main network site. Mike has developed a distinct style for his designs using bold colors and large typography, and the 9rules network is no exception.

The yellow/green colors promotes a friendly impression, putting the brand and headlines in focus. Whitespace, contrast, readbility - all seems to be in order. The content is liberated from massive lists of links and unrelated information, focusing on the latest headlines and featured articles, which is nice. There is a nice javascript drop down if you click the icons next to each headline displaying even more titles from the blog. Unfortunately it doesn't work without javascript, but non-javascipt users can still access the main part of the site.

Well done and good luck!

Thanks for the great review David, it's an honor coming from you. To let some people know, the weblog will soon be styled just like the main site — many things still in the works as 9rules is still in active development.

So remember that hard-hat when you check it out :) Thanks again.

Hmm... I submitted this too, the day after it was published, but my submission seems to have been lost somehow. Oh well, I still love it.

9 Networks has been around for awhile of course - but this new design is nice and clear, and well presented. The styling and logos are crisp and bold. There is also a good use of gradient backgrounds to add more sophistication to the site. I think this is one of the better layouts I have seen in awhile and is easy to navigate. Good use of spacing the elements.

I have given it an 8.

More and more sites start using inverted color schemes which was few months/years ago almost unacceptable. If you look at many previous entries (Niggle, Bonsai, Storm to the cape etc.) and 9rules also uses a lot of text on dark background color. Now I'm asking myself ... do we have to be afraid of using text on dark or was it just a flash in the pan during the times of webdesign usuability startup?

Thanks for your ideas

It looks very nice indeed, but the text is not resizable in IE/Win.

Neat design. Adds focus where it should be, and with minimal graphics it adds a lot of depth. It's an effective informative page. It's all there on the front-page basicly.

Not a huge fan of RSS myself (yet at least) I still prefer the good old Browsing to a site myself :p. But I think the RSS feed list is Gold. Especially for a network like this.

@madeo. I honestly have no idea where the hate for dark backgrounds came from. Thing is that it's acctually easier to read, or at least look at for a longer period. As familiar, color is created through light reflecting on a surface.

A screen however, is not reflected light but emitting light. Update frequence and the amount of light emitted from a white area is often straining on the eye. Dark backgrounds emits less light and thus less straining. Habit though is an important factor. Most people are used to reading black text on white background. Really the only reason not to use dark backgrounds...

Neat design. I adore the bonds oranges in bold on the clear background.

The only negative point that I find is the association of 4 different colors for the background (dark, green, orange clear, white), which can be shocking.

Maybe like Fredrik, I am not accustomed to the dark background, and that I prefer the clear backgrounds.

I did prefere the old design which was very strong. The newer is simpler and is maybe more readable but I have a preference for the the old. A mix of the two would be perfect.

The new design is exceptional. It's really great work.

If all the sites were also beautiful, it would be a real pleasure to surf for hours on the internet.

I somewhat agree with Kevin. The site is really really great but, looks a bit 'over crowded' . Take SG instead, Neat.

A list apart is another example for such neat sites.
