Review:

Apples to Oranges is the personal portfolio site of Ryan Nichols. The title says all about the theme here, and the colors are following the minimalistic fruit appearance of the site. Nice use of white space and beautiful subtle graphic details. The only thing bothering me is the left menu; not that it is placed on the left side, but the way they look doesn't really suit the theme. Otherwise a nice little site with crisp and clean colors combined with good layout and typographic sense.

I agree with the statement about the menu tabs. I think the tabs are inconsistent with the smooth fonts, rounded corners and lack of gradients used in rest of the pages.

Overall, though, it's a good-looking site. I really like the orange and green colors and the spliced apple/orange graphic. I do wonder why there's no header on the Contact page, and why the font size switcher is at the bottom of the page. Little things, but important to consider. Nice visual design, though.

As someone with quite bad eyesight, when I stumble on sites with light grey fonts, I cringe. I especially hate to see a site with a great design (in most respects) fall towards this useless trend (hey, where did the ink go?) I also agree that the left side vertical tabs are out of place, and the pixel font is just as bad and trendy as light grey text.

I love the vibrant colors chosen, and the overall feel of the site is smooth. Just a few quirks that throws it off.

There's a long horizontal scrollbar when viewed in Opera, and the footer area is broken. I like the bright colours of the apple and orange, and also like the logo typeface as well. I agree with Matt about the pixel font on the navigation tabs, they feel a bit underdone.

I like the use of color in the site and the nice image. Something very appealing about combo of the apple and orange - don't know what it is.

I like the overall layout and positioning of the menus, however, I do feel the look of them are inconsistent with the rest of the page. Nice site.

The clean, unpretentious layout makes this site attractive and the well chosen colours give it a fresh-from-the-grocery feel.

I think we sometimes focus on the layout of the site while overlooking the content. I like the quotes at the top and the writing is informative without being too wordy.

I really liked that he specified what he actually did in his portfolio section rather than taking credit for everything -- nice to see that he's honest.

Great job!

The rockbeatspaper site was critcised for the lime green text on white and this site has the same - it's just too hard to read.

If you click to enlarge the text from the bottom links the backgrounds disapear in ie6 & mozilla. The wacky text colours give you a sore head and you can hardly read them.

Nice clean site, however there seems to be a number of layout issues present when viewed in Opera 7.54.

Thanks for the good input. I worked on a few of the issues mentioned, I agree on those tabs.

I still have to work on that opera issue, but thanks for alerting me to it.

Cheers!

The design looks good and I really like those tabs, I've bookmarked this one myself in the "nice looking sites" folder.

The contact form doesn't indicate that any of the fields are required and the resulting error message is intimidating.

Is it just me or those green and orange headings are just too hard to read. Have a thought for your users.

I wish the owners of this site would visit the contrast checker. Those lime green headings are impossible to read on a laptop.Imagine how someone with a visual impairment feels. The tabs don't work and make it awkward to read. The layout is not aesthetically pleasing and makes it a poor user experience. To me it's a bit rough around the edges and could do with some more attention to detail. Not polished I'm afraid. BTW Style gala - my real address is .net but your form wont accept it.

Ran out of space... The balance of the layout could be improved if the padding on the rhs was equal to that of the lhs. There is a graphical divider which clearly shows it is closer to the rhs edge. This needs fixed because the layout looks lop sided. Some extra whitespace (say 3-4 pixels) wouldn't go a miss. More contrast is a definite as it's just too insipid.
