Review:
C-Ville is a refreshing site that uses a illustration as its main design focal point. One of the main things that caught my attention with C-Ville was the flash and static versions of the site. One thing I often encounter is that many sites built with flash do not offer a very pleasing static site. Not the case with C-Ville their static site is just as visually beautiful as their flash. Not only did they manage a very well built Flash site but they also incorporated a standards based static design as well.
One concern I had with C-Ville while examining the static page was the little bit of flash that did appear. With a quick turning off of the javascript I found that even this area had been covered.
The biggest aspect of the site that I particularly enjoyed was the illustrations that make up the design. Taking a different approach to design and using a large illustration, as the main focus, was refreshing. Another area that works well is the navigation. At first sight it is rather small but enlarging the text doesn’t affect this design. An added bonus is that the site has a positive message and lots of information to walk away with. The use of the scriptaculous scripting library to deliver the tobacco facts is also a nice addition.
It has been a long time since I’ve encountered a website that has been refreshing to look at. While you're at it take a look at the flash version to see the wonderful illustrations that decorate the site a bit closer.

Designing with Web Standards
Good review. The visual attention to detail is the first thing which caught my eye, and which continued to impress throughout the visit. The music on the flash site fits the scene perfectly, along with some of the kooky sound effects. The site appears to work correctly with and without javascript, the code is clean bar some inline scripting, and as a bonus it validates. Fantastic effort :)
Big fan of this site and I'm glad someone finally found the time to review it.
Thank you sooooo much for showcasing this! It was an honor to work on this project! Stylegala rocks!
This site goes so far on a purely imaginational level, that it transcends any boundaries in coding, animation, or even audio. The little animated C on all the static pages, would be easy to pull off with a transparent-windowless flash movie.
The level of interactivity for the intended audience is just superb. I had no idea Larissa Meek was involved with the project.
Nice pick Ed.
I really like the visula design and aesthetic feel of this site, excellent work. However I rated it really lowly because it just doesn't put its message across. Only by reading the very bottom text and the few links did I realise this is an anti-smoking site. Not good. By reading the intro text you'd believe it was more of a "what's your choice in life" forum type site.
Superb web site. I was captivated as I moved through it. The 'c coins' are a great idea too, I went through trying to find all the hidden ones.
The whole idea behind this is not pushing the whole anti-smoking thing in peoples faces. It is entertaining to go through, and you get the message, but in small doses.
My hats off to the designers and developers.
Hey there,
Firstly, really great Design, it's absolutely lovely. Especially the Flash version is really good.
What I dont agree with is the remark from the ED that the XHTML version of the site is supposed to work without javascript, because it doesnt ; ) Well, the first page does, but click on "Tobacco Facts" on the top navigation bar and then try and click on something in the subnavigation without javascript enabled... it dont work. which is a pity because except that everything works perfectly... if javascript isnt enabled the links should work as normal href's.
cheers

Great template!
Like Luke L above, in fact, perhaps more poingnantly than Luke, I came away not having the first clue what the site was about. Luke, unlike me, had the forsesight to read the usually unimportant text in the footer, whereas I didn't.
One could put a case across for saying that's my fault. I, however, would argue that a site needs me to understand it, in order to encourage interaction and resue, not the other way around. This is one key area where this site falls flat on its face.
Even now that I know what it is supposed to be about, I can't, for the life of me, see how the design relates to that in any way whatsoever.
Technically, it's a well-crafted and well thought out site. Conceptually however, it really misses its mark, I feel.
Hmmmm ... I must say that I, too, favour the Flash version. I have rarely had so much pleasure in 'playing' with the content as I have on this site. :) I think it conveys its message quite well. For any smoker wanting to quit smoking, I do believe the purpose of the site becomes pretty clear right away. The little 'C' animated character is a good symbol and immediately alludes to the vitamin deficits of any smoker. At least, for me, it was evident without having to read the text.
Anyway, with that said, I think the visual design elements are fantastic and it's nice to see a serious topic being packaged in a cute and playful manner.
Am I the only one who noticed the tab navigations border not matching the background? It looks so out of place to have this gorgeous site and then an ugly dark border on a light background with hard edges... Just seems "off".
I didn't look at the flash design as I absolutely detest flash and everything it stands for, although I think the static version of the site is nothing special and could definitely use a lot more fine tuning. The loading graphic for the images has small white artifacts on the edges that become painfully visible on the dark grey background it's utilized on. The little things like that I guess are the most glaring for me being in the industry.
Maybe I need to break down and load the flash version to fully appreciate this site. I'm just not sure I can bring myself to do it :P
I think the criticism about the site not fulfilling its goals is misdirected. This looks like one of those public announcement projects that tries to hide its true intentions about drug awareness as much as possible to bait young people in and get them to read the facts about tobacco. It's a marketing issue and was probably the fault of the client, not the designers. It's only speculation, but I have a feeling it's the case.
From a code standpoint, it's allright. If it weren't dependent on Javascript it would be great. From a design standpoint, it's solid. Just check out the forum... very nice theming of something that is usually overlooked.
I have no respect for designers cluelessly using href="javascript:void(0);"
I suggest RTFM and re-implementing navigation.
This site is great in every way. Isn't much more to say about it really.
Visual impression of the site is rather impressive, but after a while it seems as if they dropped the focus when the flash got introduced.
The navigation concept simply bothers me. "Artwork" and "downloads" before "tobacco facts" on a tobacco prevention site doesn't hold any credit imo.
The "Your choices define you" is seemingly a link, though it's not. Just don't get why they would choose for such an option.
Surely no issue to cry about, though compared with the excellent visuals and somewhat solid atmoshpere it reeks of a lack with conceptual thinking - or as stated earlier; some interference of the bourgeois.
Rather refreshing design. Although it took me a while to find out this was about tabacco, it's a site that keeps visitors on the site, exploring stuff.
I really like the design. The layout was easy to understand and follow the content. I liked the banners and the image rollovers on the site. It was very well done.
Thanks,
Seth
