Review:

Fantastic design from 31three, with further development from Drew Warkentin (www.drewwarkentin.com). With so many incredible CSS-based designs fighting for recognition these days, it takes something very special to bring back the "Wow" factor.

The colour palette fits the content perfectly, with brilliant use of tiled background patterns and fades. The thick white image borders work well against the rich, warm backgrounds, yet few would have thought such a bold statement would be successful on an otherwise muted design.

Interestingly, different sections use slightly different layouts (articles have extraneous information stripped away, and new treatments are brought in). The homepage utilises three columns, and manages to deliver a lot of information without crowding the design.

Clearly, clever planning results in a site that shines due to it's simplicity. Everything is just so well organised. Equally, familiar elements are just that bit more interesting. The footer looks fantastic, yet doesn't do anything extraordinary.

It is a shame that a few divider divs litter the markup, but we all know that sometimes there is no other way, and technically the level 4 heading text could have been rendered in uppercase with CSS, not in the markup.

Nit-picking aside, I see a design that works in perfect harmony with it's content. A brilliant job.

I think this is a very, very well designed site. Infact, I think that it's the organization of the content which makes it so beautiful.

Good work.

Stylegala rarely posts sites in the Gallery. But when it does you understand why. Sites this good are few and far between. This is very deserving of a post.

A beautiful design and construction.

This is a great design. The colours work beautifully and the layout is brilliantly functional. The style is actually more the type I'd expect from Cameron Moll, Jesse's layouts are normally really crisp and "minimal", but he's pulled this look off really well and still managed to get a few of his "signature" elements in (the fades, layout, etc). Good work, definitely worthy of the gala.

It's OK. Lucida Sans font on the homepage looks awful on PC. Again, it's nice, but nothing mind-blowing. Personally I'm really tired of the heavily cliched wallpaper background look also.

Thanks for the nice review Simon (and others)... much appreciated.

Wayde, thanks for the heads up about the font. It looked fine on my pc here, but I got a few other reports about it as well so I've switched it around. Hopefully it's more readable now.

Jesse, looks great with Verdana, even though on my PC with ClearType Lucida looks quite nice, too. Although not like on Mac.

Applause for the open mind for such suggestions!

font on the left column is still difficult to read.

The design is clean but has everything it needs to have, nice work !

Totally agree - how refreshing :)

Sorry, but I have to disagree and state that I'm simply not feeling this design at all. Yes, it's a solid site, but nothing as outstanding as the majority of responses seem to suggest.

I'm also confused at Stylegala's policy for showcasing designs over the last few months. With CSS Reboot making its bi-annual appearance recently, I would have thought there would have been plenty of opportunity for at least a handful of additions, but instead just a few mediocre sites appear sparingly.

Hopefully more designs may start to make appearances once again if Stylegala is sold?

This design is very simple and elegant. I wasn't overwhelmed when I visited it, and could easily navigate and separate the different sections accordingly. The color scheme is very soothing to the eyes, and I had no problem reading any of the text.

Awesome job!

Fantastic design, love the look and feel of it, and it's good to see NGOs beginning to embrace standards-based design.

It seems that some the site's detractors really fail to understand that its purpose is not to wow and overwhelm - we've had enough of that stuff already - the site is there to convince people to sympathise with India's outcasts, and it did it for me.

The only criticism I would have is some of the images in the resources section look a bit dodgy, other than that, it's a great piece of work.

I guess it's a nice enough design but I'm really not seeing what the big deal is. I mean it's a good example of a simple site but beyond that I'm left scratching my head.

Great site as always!

One thing the sub nav on the about page the "Frequently Asked Questions" breaks into two lines making it overlap into "Board of Directors", you should probably just make it F.A.Q.'s or something.

Cheers

Great comments guys. Honestly, I really didn't expect this site to get listed on Stylegala, but I thought I'd submit it anyway just in case. I'm glad I did, as it has really helped raise some awareness about the problems the Dalit are facing in India.

I'll be tweaking the site over the next few days to try to get all of the bugs sorted out.

Thanks, Jesse

Hi,

I find the design very beautiful. Specially the "Polaroid"-Borders are a very nice idea.

One thing I dislike is the lack of scaleability. I often set a bigger font and it's very useful if the page-elements scale with the font. On dfn changing the font-size brakes the navigation. Sorry for the nit-picking.

Good design, clear and warm.

Anyway I'm quite disappointed about headings rendering: h3 and h4 appear in the same way.

I think its way too easy just to say "wow, great design, best ive ever seen!" these days. This site does present it's information well and looks stylish in doing so, however it doesnt really do anything for me in particular.

The code is pretty clean, bar some inline javascript but it does not validate correctly. Considering how long SG is taking to review websites these days I would have though every site featured would be absolutely outstanding. Though nice I dont think this site is anything particularly out of the ordinary. Nice work by Jesse Bennett-Chamberlain, but dissapointing choice from stylegala after the wait.

Please try and refrain from verbally shittin on me - this is only my opinion.

@steve, how much of a shame it has become that you even have to leave disclaimiers like that. I yearn for the stylegala of a year or so ago, seemed older more mature people where on here. or at the very least the younger folk acted more mature. now it seems if you have a desenting opinion you have to be ready for a verbal attack...

@David B.: TELL ME ABOUT IT.

Anyway, I think this is a great site. The colors and structure are good, and I like the way different sections were individually designed according to their needs. I did find one mistake, the "View Shopping Cart" text breaks to a second line on Win FF 1.5. I can provide a screenshot if necessary. It probably just needs a small fix.

And I'll echo Steve's point; Stylegala sure took a long time to post a new entry in the gallery. It's nice to make stuff up and say that "there just hasn't been enough good stuff lately," but I don't buy it :)

Strange use of random font styles but its all seems to work well. Its very easy to read too much easier than a white background.
