Review:
Ed does a great job with his one pager. Clean and crisp lines, typography and palette. Not the most original layout, but it is a solid presentation of his work and his important details. It gets to the heart of the matter very quickly.
His portfolio work is solid and consistent as well. The color that the thumbnails provide is just the splash of color that the site needs. The Ferris Painting Contractors site is especially redeeming as compared to his other work.
I believe Ed could push his limits the next time around and give us a personal site that is truly inspiring. The site could benefit from some larger type and slightly tighter line spacing. It is a strain on the eyes, even with my 20" iMac and corrected vision. There are some semantic issues with his use of H1 (there are more than one) and one-pagers always present a challenge with the amount of XHMTL and CSS code needed to achieve the desired results.
Nice solid work.

The Zen of CSS Design
Nice site but a bit too neubixish for my liking. Uses the smae fonts and ratios.
It's quite amazing how these Neubix-style sites are spreading -
Thanks for adding me to the gallery, much appreciated.
Just wanted to add that a number of sites in my portfolio weren't designed by me. A lot of my work is building templates rather than designing them - only Scoot Confort, Ferris and London Boat Show are mine, I also tweaked the W3Digital design a bit.
I don't get it why you people keep adding this guy. His first version was similar to Justwatchthesky, this is similar to Neubix/Justwatchthesky. No, no, no... This is not the way to go. Don't think something like this belongs here.
Moan moan moan!
We can't all have inspired design skills as shown here: http://www.canlog.cz/
I don't see anything wrong with taking inspiration, even if it's heavy inspiration. Ok originality is better, but there are subtle differences in Eds work, the least subtle is that it's not all flash.

I like the all in one page style that is used here. The design is calm, clean and smooth. Very nice!
btw in lieu of the posts above, as said below "Keep the comment relevant, constructive and be polite". @Raven if your so concerned try discussing it in the forums where it would be a bit more appropriate.
I didn't ask you to review my site... you know? And I never said that Canlog is my best website which should be in Stylegala or something like that. What the hell, can one not express his opinion? Moreover it has been discussed so many times that he copied Justwatchthesky. Next time please think before you post something as offensive as your comment (John Ruse), it makes you look like a *****.
I just said what I think of this site and that is relevant comment, please keep yours relevant too.
i like it, clean, great image treatement...
and i mean a lot of css based websites are the same...The fact that Ed Merritt's website is blue and centered don't make it a copy of Beatiful Nothing...
I guess people like Shaun Inman set a trend with those 45 degrees 1 pixel lines backgrounds and it also seems blue is a color a lot of people choose. Furthermore it seems like a lot of CSS based designs look a bit alike these days.
However all that doesn't mean this is a bad design. In fact it's very clean and easy on the eye. I personally like it a lot even though it's not the most original thing I've ever seen.
It's very nice work I think!
I love this site, but I'm curious; what's the purpose of the clickable arrow in the header image, beneath the 'e'? You click it and it raises up, but why?
Ah -
I have to agree with raven to a point. This is really far too close to the neubix style. I think most people can see straight off it's a neubix clone so enough said. But on the plus point at least they've made a good job of it.
Just a quick note to say that comments regarding the site itself are welcomed, but try to stay away from the old "should it be here or not" discussion. As Colin Cameron noted, those discussions are better off in the forum. And this is not piratedgala.com so maybe you should keep the "clone" arguments down a bit. Thanks.
As for the H1 semantics issue mentioned in John's review above. I was swayed towards using more than one per page after reading this article: .
Absurd. :) You are using H1s for different types of headings... No matter what, you just shouldn't do that.
By the way, not clickable logo is really irritating me. I just tried to use it, and it doesn't work. Oh, well I gues that's what menu is for...
Yep, and I figured that a menu with only one link would be a bit strange.
By the sound of Andy's article most of us use H1s as we do out of habit, and from an accessibility point of view it's not a good habit.
just for the records: we all cook with water - a proverb we have down here. anyway, nice work. great graphics, beautiful colors and a nice portfolio.
@ Admin... so what exactly are people supposed to comment about if they can't say how it's too close of a copy to the Neubix site?
I guess it's okay to say "I like the colors and typography", but not "colos and typography are too much like Neubix". The thing is, people are upset because this site is essentially being REWARDED for not being all that creative.
Joshua: of course you can comment around the similarities with other sites. But there are other sites that focus on pirating and copy-cat issues, and I'd prefer if the comments here where more about the site as itself, and not who copied who or worse. Stylegala does not reward sites, we feature them. And we have a rating system to give the users control over what sites get high rankings. If you have further questions around this, please use the forum. Thanks.
I think that it might be *somewhat acceptable* for the Stylegala community to be upset if a majority of the sites that have been reviewed were "not being all that creative". But a majority of the site reviewed here ARE very creative.
Second, we can only review sites that are submitted for review. The reviewers *can* go out and find sites on their own. But I personally would rather be independent, for the most part, of the submission process and focus on quality reviews.
So go find the
I'd like to see something on the panel that rises up over the 'e' and perhaps the 'e' image to change when you're on a different section of the site.
Other than that I really like it, nice colours/fades etc and fits its purpose well.
Oh no! Colors and fonts are the same! Some other elements may be similar as well! So what?! My site may be similar to another cause I use the Courier font, black background and white font color. Sue me!
So what if this guy has designed a site that is blue and uses the same font as n00b... big deal! At least it is not a drop dead copy of the site!
People need to find other hobbies other than being so damn anally-retentive... really. *sigh*
Nice work, Ed!!! Ignore the nitpickers!
"and i mean a lot of css based websites are the same"

There is a LOT of truth in this. Dirty Laundy seems to own the land nowadays. Then again, isnt that true with most designs including those who were copied in many instances?
"There is nothing new under the sun" I believe is a quote from King Solomon in the Old Testiment. I believe it is a true statment. The question is whether we are striving to be creative or intentionally wearing Dirty Laundry (my self included).
I think we are all trying to be creative, but lets face it, you can only do so much with squares and rectangles!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a design on the web that isn’t in some way redundant!
Likewise I think you’d be hard pressed to find a photo that hasn’t been taken before in similar context, unless of course it’s an up close portrait of an inhabitant of Pluto maybe?
