Review:

You may not find this National Museum of Photography, Film and Television mini-site immediately rewarding. The graphics are excellent, but the overall balance might seem slightly awkward at first glance. This was my immediate impression, but then I began to delve around under the hood.

Most impressive is the continuity. The repeated use of the red fingerprint detailing works really well, and once one rolls over more of the elements, it becomes clear just how competent designer Tom Woolley is with his CSS toolkit. Arrangement of information is carefully thought out in every section, and the navigation is crystal clear.

I particularly liked the treatment of the page, where a containing "whatsongrid" div is used to house several interlocking blocks replicating the kind of image juxtaposition that everyone used to do with tables. Infact, I recommend spending as much time scanning Tom's source code here - it's another lesson in excellent structural markup and thoughtful use of block level elements, with all viewing possibilities (disabled styles, JavaScript, images) considered.

I think that the design works very well with the subject matter of the site. I definitely feel a little creeped out after visiting the site. Also makes me want to go check out the Matrix Trilogy on IMAX, sounds cool.

I agree that this site takes a lot of getting used to. To be honest, I still don't like it a lot - maybe it's because I'm generally not a fan of black-centric gory site designs, but anyway, I feel it's a bit simplistic in its layout... the headings are ugly Arial text, and while the fingerprints are a nice addition, the thin red borders in my opinion bring back memories of the <table> days. It's definitely not up to the standard of other sites in this gallery.

Great images (but I suppose they should be for a film site) that make me want to see the films. I think all the red lines compartmentalize it too much and are crying out to be broken through and perhaps removed here and there.

The Museum is really excellent, btw, and a must-see if you're in the area. But beware the Imax! It is so realistic that I developed a fear of heights I have been unable to shake off! I got it after seeing a film that put the viewer in the seats of fast moving cars and helicopters. Scary!

This site was so hard to read! Even after I wiped all the boogers off my monitor, I still didn't respond favorably to this site. Infact, I think I liked it better prior to the cleaning because my boogers are yellowish green which really broke out of the monochromactic motif this site has going for it. I think this guy must be really hip to horror vacui because there is too much gunk everywhere. Like I said, when my boogers were obscuring part of this site, it looked a lot better. Just my opinion, 7/10.
