Review:
Maker of fine familiar icons and web standards advocate Jon Hicks redesigns his studio site. With great use of whitespace the new layout breathes fresh alp air, but maybe that's because of the Sound Of Music inspired landscapes rotated to the right of the page. Jon has some inspiring work in his portfolio, and the new site wraps it all up nicely. Super-clean code, tight typgraphy and friendly, logically structured content. I'm not really sure about those validation buttons in the bottom though, and I would really like to see some more images and write-ups on each of the projects. But I absolutely love the yellow and purple headers. Great job Jon.

I really like the re-design as a whole even though I am not a fan of open pages generally.. I like them to be contained. Either way, looks great and anyone who has been watching Jon's work knows it is clean on the coding end of things.
Really nice re-design. Though I have some comments to the code. I don't really think that // hicksdesign and hello there should both be h1's, they don't seem to be of the same importance to me, but that is quite subjective. ;) Also I believe that 6 last projects could be done using unordered list. Well there are some small mistakes in stylesheet, but that's OK, i think. ;)
Nice job. Really nice.
It's all over the place in ie6 and it only works at one resolution - 1024x768 I'm using a 19inch Flatscreen at 1280 x 1024. Nav is top left, there's a floating image on the right, there's a grey stripey image in the centre of the page. Looks worse on mac IE - nav disappears off the page.
I like the new design... back to nature :) kewl!
its a nice site, maybe a bit to empty. im not really fan of that popout menu but the usage of whitespace and nice icons make up for it
Is it busted in IE6 on purpose?
Jon put up the redesign before it was finished, so I imagine most of the issues will be resolved.
I've got to admit I liked his previous design better, but I've got no real complaints about this one. I guess I'm just not a fan of the image on the right.
Jon is amazing. I know few designers whose icon or web design are as tasty as Jon's much less both! His site is a daily visit for me and I love the new look.
Cheers
There was quite a hub-bub when Jon changed his site over; fans of the old Hicksdesign flipped out when their world turned upside down on them. But for what? I truly think that the new site feels much more open and is almost easier for me to read. Why? I'm not exactly sure, maybe there was just too much green surrounding the text before?
Either way, I like this version of Hicksdesign much better than the last one. And that's that.
A great redesign, so easy to use.
Id prefer more of the design to show in the thumbnails to take some of the guesswork out of what you're clicking on.
I like it!
clean layout, nice use of white
John's work is great. I genuinely went 'wow' when I saw this site for the first time.
There's great use of whitespace, and everything's so neatly done.
A firm favourite.
Typicaly british style, clean and boring , you should use different colors, red, blue, green..they shoul cover the page more than white..
Please don't feel that you have to adhere religiously to a certain
color in a certain location, the above colors are just
a starting point.
nice design!!...cheers
yes i agree lowely design! i got to make sth similar!
I appreciate the idea of placing little square icons as a links, however this cause a problem for a visitor to guess what is what, and as you know static visitor won't spend more than 10 seconds on the site, so your buttons/links should be clear to understand from the first glance.
Personally a big fan of white space ... there seems to be a bit of a loss in site structure when going into your journal section. A lot of it visually runs together for me.
Site note ... really like your work for Mozilla.
Hicksdesign have a great projects !
I'm not really sure about those validation buttons in the bottom though, and I would really like to see some more images and write-ups on each of the projects.
I'm a webmaster and my vote is 9 on 10 scale.
Good job !
Someone else below asked this already.
I am getting nailed with Spam in my guestbook for our catalog website. Is there anyway to stop this? If not, there really isn't any point in leaving it up and active. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
I guess: The redesign has turned out well.
Congratulation!
hi, clean layout, nice use of white.
Hi,
Great article - good job! You are professional writer, it's very interesting when I reading it.
This is my favorite in the all stars. The illustration really makes the page.
