Review:
OK here goes. I am going out on a limb here as I don't speak a word of German. The beauty of design though is that it appeals to the brain on many fronts.
It is great to see industrial business websites realising the importance of CSS, good markup and design. This is a new business site design presenting a special thermal insulation technique for houses.
The most appealing areas of this design for me are the colour pallets used throughout the site (warm and cold), the layout of the design and choice of fonts.
The only real negatives for me is the Brillux (estimator?) Pop-up. It is not embedded in the rest of the site and feels like an afterthought.
I am sure the purists will be screaming from the hill tops but in my mind this site is well worth it's place. You decide!

Nice clean design, but I don't think that using the Apple Dashboard Calculator widget on their top-page is exactly kosher... especially considering it doesn't seem to have anything to do with it.
The colors are cool. No they're hot. Good job this is about thermal insulation as that's about the only subject matter I can think of that would allow a swing from hot and cold colors. Good clean design.
nice site. the color works really well and is probably the thing that sets this site apart from others in it's class.
Looking at this site I see a few issues.
1. I run a 17" wide screen monitor and the page looks really bad where the logo is it doesn't stretch out to the full sides of the page.
2. The image of the couple bleeds under the orange bar.
I am looking at this page wondering why it was picked. The colors are decent but definitely nothing to drool over. I am slowly losing confidence in how this site picks sites to display.
I'm sure there is, but is there a criteria that Stylegala uses to judge these things? The site validates and that is a good thing, but the design gets a 4/10 it's been done before and the navigation effect of having the sub nav touch the image is not consistent throughout the site.
Working in my last job I found that companies don't care about CSS or XHTML and I think we give "companies" too much credit. When a site validates it is because the developer took the time to do it. Let's not give credit to a company who more than likely has no ide
@Seth:
What are the submission guidelines?
These guidelines are preferably followed as close as possible.
* The design must be of high quality. Not just on a programming level - but also on a graphic design level.
* The site should be built with web standards and preferably validate as XHTML 1.0 or HTML 4.01 compliant using the W3C validator.
* Appropriate tags should be used for markup, that means tables are for tabular data and divisions for content separation etc.
* The site should be viewable and readable in most modern web browsers and there should be a true separation between content and presentation using CSS.
* The site should be visually appealing and have some sort of content - not just a template design.
etc etc etc. You can read the rest on the submission page.
you know why i think stylegala has not submitted many sites to the gallery? its cause of people like you, seth, that bitch and moan about every site as not being "anything new"
of course there are things here that have been done before man, its a web site, there are only so many variations one can go through, the image bleeding under the organe and redish bars is a design element, done on purpose, duh? if you dont like the site then say that and vote it down, but to then call on the carpet the stylegala site on a whole for this entry is immature at best.
if you dont think this site is working for you anymore, go somewhere else. there are plenty of others who love being here and though we may not always agree we try to do so politly.
What??
Brown text on brown background??
C'mon folks.. there are so much well designed pages out there and when I look for sites at Stylegala I just dunno... maybe you should start commenting sites that already have been on other showcases... then you know they are good ;)
No offense, but there's one post in like a month, and this is the one you post? Sorry, I just don't think it's very good.
It's hard to read, the line height needs to be increased, the drop shadows are too dark, the logo and fonts are boring, the shadow on the footer is not consistent with the rest of the page, too many drop shadows, the nav on top is clunky, the margins look too big in relation to the text, it's basically one color in different shades...
I'm sure the usual comment nazis will now jump all over me, but I'm not trying to be negative. it's just an opinion.
You must get hundreds of submissions a day. Here are a few sites that I've seen around lately that I think are much nicer to look at:
http://www.bigcartel.com
http://www.thecity.org
http://www.karaburke.net
http://www.logopond.com
I understand what you mean Bradley, Julian but you know what will happen, somebody else will then come and complain about how thoese sites have made the rounds all over the other galleries and why is stylegala not leading the crowd but following, its benn done over and over.
its like a situation where i think the reviewers are damned if they do and damned if they dont.
I have a suggestion, why dont all the people who have a hard time with how stylegala reviews sites or the sites they do review, submit a review of their own. maybe when the shoe is on the other foot, you will understand what i can only image is a hard job of pleaseing everyone out here is web land.
Logopond was done by to of the moderators here, dont think that would go over well...
I don't like how you have to scroll to the bottom of the page to find out where you are. The nav is absolutely hideous and does not blend with the rest of the site. They did a decent job of choosing colors, but I'm really not a big fan of changing the entire color scheme for every page.
Overall, the site is pretty dull and I'm a bit let down that we waited so long for the next awesome featured site to be such a turd.
Turd is right. This site ain't what it used to be, that's for sure.
Bret, go find that site and offer it up to stylegala to review then you will have you wish, but then dont get mad, when people call your submission a turd.
@tim
This is a forum. The reason sites are posted is to critique them. I am sorry that I don't kiss ass when someone posts something on here. I am by no means saying I would post better or newer material, but I have not put myself in the position to do so. The owners of this site should understand that if they post something it should be special. I am tired of people saying people with a negative or different opinion should leave. If everyone went around kissing ass whenever it seemed appropriate then design would not progress.
If some young designer sees this site and thinks it good design or css then we have done them wrong. It's not the end of the world, but if you're going to showcase a website as a recommendation it should be worth looking at. If I am an arrogant ass for saying that then I'm proud to be an arrogant ass.
Easily the ugliest site I have seen on here. And Bradley is right there are far too many sites that should have been showcased here other than this one.
Sorry Simon, bad choice :)
Guys, guys , guys. Please read the rules on posting comments. There are far too many so called old timers here who have no respect for the rules or fellow designers. Anymore comments about this site should not be here etc etc etc will be deleted instantly and the comment poster will be banned.
This is NOT a forum. If you want to post your negative comments about Stylegala please do so in the correct place or go and find somewhere else to hang out.
Make your comments about the site only and use grown up speak. Turd this or crap that is not respectful.
Feel free to post sites that are worthy of Stylegala review by using the submission form. Every single site is visited. Add your name to the submission too so that you get the credit you deserve.
I like the print version of this site and how they added that logo if css is disabled.
+ those designer/submitter links should be fixed in this review cause they are not working atm cause of missing http://
@Bradley:
The sites you mention are of course nice to look at. If that were the only criteria for a review at Stylegala there would be hundreds up per week. A quick look to see if those sites even validate though will show that:
bigcartel - Does not validate and the text is fixed in the small size you see on the screen.
TheCity - Does not validate and the text does not resize.
Karaburke - The CSS does not validate. The text does not resize.
I will not comment on logopond as it is a site designed by moderators here at Stylegala. However, if somebody was to submit it then it would receive the same attention as every other site that gets submitted.
I apologize for calling the site a turd. But the rest of my comments were valid and constructive, wether they were positive or negative about the site, and I stand by them. The message you are now conveying is that we are supposed to accept your opinion of what is good design and if we question your opinion or voice our own, then we are banned. If that is true, then I think I will find somewhere to "hang out".
@Simon
I have been a supporter of Stylegala before you purchased it and I plan to be a supporter now. My points were due to the fact that the site is nothing special.
I agree that you should not post something just to post it, but to me and a few others it feels like that is what happened. I do apologize for not remaining 100% constructive, but since the sites are not posted but every so often when a new one comes up I check it out right away. This can be frustrating when I feel like I do better sites that what are showcased...not saying I'm amazing at what I do, but I come here to learn.
There are a ton of links that are posted on this site that have helped me tremendously but when it comes down to showing off something that is such a prominent area of the website it needs to be something amazing on all fronts.
I think that if you are not willing to receive negative critiques then why let people comment at all? If negative comments can't be taken then how can you
@Aldridge point take, and yes you are an arrogant ass ;) i may have been out of line telling you to leave, and i have no problem with people having a different view point, but going after the design is one thing, going after this site is another, where is the appreciation for the work involved here. seems everyone has something to say but noone contributes anything of substance.
@Brent how you feel or any of you feel as the designer of that site to come here and see people calling it what you all have caled this site. this site is in no way a 'bad' or 'horribly designed' site.
you have got it all wrong, noone is saying that you cant have a adverse comment, he is jsut saying keep the comments mature. again if you have somethng better to post submit it here or start your own site and post it there. the fact of the matter is that more and more sites are looking and feeling the same and pulling out the creme is hard, go look arround the other galleries its all clones!
@Seth and everyone else:
I personaly have no problem with negative comments. Feel free to post them in the correct place on the site which is in the forum. I do however have a problem with disrespecting fellow designers by calling their work crap or even to presume that their site has no place on Stylegala. If you want to show yourself up then please do that in the forum where it is easier to get into a discussion.
Of all the sites submitted to Stylegala in the last month this site is one of the best. That's my opinion of course but hey, I'm only a designer so what do I know.
Lets just put this to bed right now. Please feel free to comment on this site. Your positive or negative comments are welcome. If you want to be disrespectful or you want to say how Stylegala is not what it used to be etc then do that in the forum. I can't really say more than that.
Forgive me for indulging Seth Aldridge for a moment before commenting on the site.
@Seth Aldridge:
You didn't seem to get Tim's point (which was spot-on, in my opinion). You first commented disapprovingly on the site being showcased. Fair enough. But you then spent the last half of your post criticising Stylegala by questioning/despairing at the submissions policy.
Hint: criticise the showcased site here, but criticise Stylegala elsewhere (the appropriate thread(s) in the forums).
Your reply to Tim seemed to say that you have been told not to be critical of showcased sites. No-one here at least has said that. You ignore the distinction between your own criticism of Stylegala and of the showcased site, which allows you to present things in such a way to make out that you are being told off for not praising the showcased site. You didn't just criticise the site, you criticised Stylegala and its submissions policy.
Please try to separate your criticisms along the lin
[continued]
Please try to separate your criticisms along the lines of the distinction that Tim and others have made. That way, we'll hopefully get focused and useful critique from you on the showcased site at hand, and maybe then we'll learn from your insight into web design. Stylegala and all its readers benefit from this sort of comment. In addition, the fact that you can separate your criticism of Stylegala from the individual sites showcased will lend weight to your opinions. So far, in spite of the fact that you have supported Stylegala, your comments here harbour the faint whiff of some kind of grudge (however true or false that may be). Please digest what I've said.
The daemm-info site has the makings of a really nice clean design IMHO, with the added advantage of an less usual colour scheme that nevertheless works (on the whole). However, the drop-shadow logic is off (as someone else pointed out). This has a cumulative negative impact on the design that is larger
You know... I actually like the site. It has a nice overall appeal that is very positive. It is very professional and even tho I can't read a word of German either I could easily understand what the site was communicating. I can see why it you liked it Simon :-)
@ Martin - Point taken
Not to further push the knife into the wound, but I have read over all the comments on this page and do and have apologized for not remaining 100% constructive.
I will save criticism for the forum if it pertains to Stylegala that frustration came from a long list of things that happened to the site, but I am truly optimistic that things are going to continually get better.
@simon:
Why is "text does not resize" important?? That's a problem of the browser, not the designer.
@Julian text not resizing is not a browser issue, its usually from the designer making the font size in px instead of ems.
some browsers can force the fonts bigger others cannot when sized in px.
I think it looks nice...
Every website can be improved of course, for the simple fact that design (as an art) is subjective. Technically, this site is great. Clean code and functional. Aesthetically, it looks good but not "WOW!" It works, and that's a good thing.
Umm..to get back to the site: I like it in general. One thing that's confusing though, is the hover states of the main navigation links (in the dropdown menu): The arrow image pointing towards the right may lead people to believe that the dropdown will expand more; yet it is the last element in the hierarchy.
