Review:
I've loved this site since the first time I saw it -- which was quite a while ago, when it was first submitted. (I'm a bit behind on my posting.)
Too often, "minimalist" web design means that the designer slapped it together in a couple of hours and didn't have time to do anything nice with it. This definitely isn't the case here. It's apparent that Jeff has put a lot of thought into the details and layout of his site.
I think what I like best about this design is the use of columns. It's easy to fall into the trap of being clunky, symmetrical, and "bloglike," but Jeff manages to avoid that. By mixing up the column sizes, lengths, and positions, he creates an effect that is lively and organic. The column lengths don't match, but it appears that he's taken care to have it create an intentional "shape," rather than being haphazard.
The code loses a few points for some non-semantic/structural class and ID names (e.g., "b-right"), but wins those points back -- and then some -- for accesskey support, extensive use of link titles, avoidance of divitis, and the fact that it looks great with styles turned off.

This isn't lively OR organic (James) - too many lists of links across too many columns looks cluttered and disorganised.
Also, light colored fonts on white backgrounds should be banned! This makes the typography not a high enough contrast (especially on the smaller text).
I'm sure the site content is interesting enough, and Jeff has shown that he's put a lot of effort in to it.
Just alter the colors and drop the clunky column layout - and you'll have a neater site for it. :)
My first impression was 'Oh, it's just another blog' - and that's a shame. Jeff, I think your site has potential and you're a cool guy!

Love the layout. The scheme and design.
Like how some areas are removed out of focus through brighter text. Would like to see a solution to highlight or increase contrast on these though. The :hover doesn't make the right-hand list much easier to read for instance.
One thing though, that is of great concern is that I don't think the layout is correct for it's application. The site is supposed to be . But I generally get the impression of a larger organization. It's a very bussinesslike design. While nothing wrong with wanting to relay that it's your style, it feels like an awful lot of (sometimes redundant) information taking up valuable screenplace in order to deliver pretty basic information.
Of course it's all subjective. It's good that people dare to think outside the blog. I just don't get the feeling of this being a portfolio at all, or a journal either. It seems more like an brand-name portal...
Key word to this design is the description of the site as a 'journal'. Thats _exactly_ the feel this design imparts to me. It makes me want to read more and that can only be a winning formula really. Nice one.
I love the way he has managed to include four columns without it looking very cluttered. I also like the color scheme quite a bit.
On the right sidebars, many of the links could use some padding I feel, as they are quite smooshed. Also, the sub-headers aren't terribly elaborate (really, just a tiny font bolded).
I gave it a 7/10.
This has also been one of my favorites ever since I saw it. The column layout is unique and interesting, and the flatness of the graphic design gives it a very print-like feel. I love it.
The design is done really well. Good information overview. A lot of information, but it doesn't feel as too much for the eye.
But it's a bit messy in IE 5.5 and before.
My first attention was pointed on the 2 left columns, looks non ordinary, but are userfriendly in the same time. Nice content
