Review:

The smashLAB gang has pulled off a fine accomplishment with this site, providing an evocative aesthetic environment that is fresh and creative without sacrificing overall usability.

Their interesting approach to the usual two-column format shows that the general concept is still valuable, but it doesn't have to be as bland as we see it on most sites.

The source code has some problems, including co-mingled presentation and structure, a bad case of divitis, and some heading abuse (probably for search engine ranking), but they did succeed at creating a pleasantly fresh layout without tables.

The attention to detail on the graphical elements is commendable. It feels like they ran out of juice on a few areas (the main menu in particular), but in general the site provides some interesting interface ideas.

This is the kind of site that will probably be torn apart in the comments on this post, but it does have many redeeming features, and I for one am bookmarking it for creative inspiration at some point in the future.

James, you're right...going to be torn apart :-) I agree, it has an interesting design. It's such a hodge-podge of different design elements...

- wood background

- stamp header

- notebook paper main content

- elegent "kicking features"...reminds me of neubix a little bit, similar clean styles.

- torn paper footer

- silhouette footer

The part I personally like the best is the footer...the rest just seems to clash to me...I'd say stick with one style and go with it.

I also don't like the fact that the content is so far down the homepage.

I like the secondary/content pages a lot...I wish the homepage was styled and laid out more similar.

Overall very interesting.

Hard to judge the overall design with that awful woodgrain background.

I have to agree: that wooden background isn't too easy on the eye.

While I liked the site initially, a peek under the hood shocked me. Divitis to say the least. Oh yeah, the layout is not exactly 800x600 friendly, why do you have to scroll to see the content?
