Review:
A year ago almost to the day we reviewed version 2 of Protopage. The free web2.0/Ajax page builder. Version 3 has just been launched and it's revamped.
This site is a beacon for those looking to develop applications for the so called Web2.0 era. If this site does not inspire you and feed your creative juices then web2.0 is not for you.
My personal feelings about this site are that it follows a kind of Windows XP feel. Not necessarily bad but for a web application looking to lead it should create a feel all of it's own.
Something this complex will also throw up usability issues. I found that navigating around the site is very hard. Getting back to where you were before is a living hell.
This is not a perfect website (does one even exist) it is far from it but it's different and I like different. I have opened this up to peer review on Stylegala, not for it's overall design and adherence to all things web standards but for the inspiration I gained from it.

Designing with Web Standards
With such a high level of interaction it's not suprising that the usability suffers to a level. Bar all it's hangups however I cannot help being impressed with technical achievements of this revamp.
It's far from the best site on the net, but then again, I doubt it aspires to be.
A nice change for Stylegala
To be honest I'm finding it hard to use. Nothing I click makes the interface do quite what I think it will. It reminds me of the Thinkature.com interface, and I don't have too much problem using that. Clicking to open a few new panels, and I couldn't quite figure how to close them. Not being a regular user of the site, I've got no experience with v.2.
V.3 looks like you could set up all sorts of resources for viewing, and I see now the colors are changeable. It has a world of possibilities, I'm not sure I have a use for it though.
I like things a little bit more streamlined.
Top of the heap in this category though.
It's a shame that it refuses to work without cookies though.
Hmm, if stylegala is going to start accepting web application into its showcase gallery, I can think of a few better ones that are accessible and usable, yet are still aesthetically pleasing.
If i have to think of one good thing about protopage - that it is cute. But nothing works, even to the minimum level, when cookies or javascript is turned off.
Web apps like joyent, events.unl.edu or renkoo.com are more worthy of a look.
@Ellie:
This site was first reviewed a year ago. There is nothing new or "start" about stylegala reviewing such sites.
I'm impressed by technical side of it - JS is written properly. Pressing middle mouse button doesn't break things, mousewheel works, keyboard works, dragging doesn't select text accidentally.
And it works like a charm in Opera (about which some *ekhm*google*ekhm* don't give a sh...).
I'm no Geek, but love the way things simply hang loose together on the page or organize them at the touch of a button. With a few carefully chosen family or party pics and videos, it's unique in the way I can publish them to the world or keep them only for the eyes of privileged password holders; I can really say there's no other start page I can personalize to look like my very own named website. It inspires me to learn more about applications and explore the web. Can’t start my day without messing around with it first.
I've been a user of Protopage since it's inception and I've found that the new version so confusion I did the unthinkable: I deleted my well-crafted page of links and feeds that I spent the last year honing and perfecting.
I won't be using the newest version of Protopage. It's too confusing even for a well-seasoned user. End of story. Goodbye.
