Review:

Jeremy Koempel has a pretty impressive portfolio and a clean valid website dressed up in metal and gradients. A solid site with nice use of green and a interface that works well. The grey background behind the also grey text might be a bit too dark for some readers. Hey Jeremy, why are you ?

Really nice site. Actually inspired my own header image. I also love the 4x6 prints that are featured there.

A beautiful site with creative color usage. Its a refreshing departure from the blocky blue sites that seem to be quite popular. Take a peek at his portfolio... the Harvard site is lovely.

Two parts AdaptivePath.com, one part twothirty.com. Feels much too derivative, I'm afraid, and the others most definitely came first. By over a year, in both cases.

I can see the AdaptivePath connection, but twothirty? The use of the color green is hardly derivative.Nor is the "pixel" motif within a digital art context, for that matter. Common, yes. Derivati

Reminds me of Adaptive Path as well, but its nice.

It does look familiar, but then again what doesn't? Specially among the web-standards comunity plus standards-compliant CMS's like blogger, word-press or movable-type. This very site looks so similar to many others. Please don't take this bad, I totally agree with the ideas behind standards. It just seems to be that, design wise, it all comes with aesthetics of its own, just like Flash made tons of sites look alike some years ago.

This site does not work in Mac OS X Safari. It also looks an awful lot like this site...wonder why you guys liked it? :)

Hmmm. doesn't work in Mac OSX Safari? I have never seen the problem. What version of Safari you are using.

Hey Michael, thank you for your comment. I develop on a Mac and test on a PC as well. Have never seen the problem. Cheers

Well, it's ok.

I recognise that this is a purely subjective reaction, but the simple inversion of the nav buttons' gradient for their hover state is a bit jarring. The state could have been achieved with more subtlety I think. Gives me the impression that not too much thought was given it, regardless (of course) of whether that's true or not. Anyway, it knocks quite a bit of the polish off, for me. Also, I think the copy could be made more interesting. It goes through the motions somewhat.

I just want to thank everyone that has voted to support my site. I have been very pleasantly surprised by the amount of positive comments and votes smallTransport has received. Drop me a note if you have any questions and again, thank you.

Noticed that the bevel gradient on the navigation buttons has changed since I made I commented here about it. The gradient for the hover state has been softened. Looks better now - the site immediately gains greater subtlety.

Wow, this site received a ton of votes. Must be a record.

I do not understand why this site is so amazing?

I think it has a good colour scheme but the fonts are irregular and the layout is very tacky.(it gets worst when you scroll down the page.) :X

commentat 14:47 on 14 October 2004, Martin wrote:

I'm not sure I understand either, Will.

It's interesting to observe how, the moment smallTransport was awarded a place in the All Stars' Gallery for September, the site stopped receiving votes. Since the award 2 or 3 weeks back, the site has remained on 352 votes, whereas before the award was decided, it was receiving on average 6 or 7 a day.

Not being privy to the site stats, all I can say is that a relatively huge amount of Stylegala's visitors must have been very keen to see this site

Martin, you seem quite obsessed with smallTransport. You took careful note of how many votes it received each day AND you take credit for what you perceive to be a change in the site's bevel gradient on the nav buttons?

Brilliant.

commentat 15:59 on 14 October 2004, EmilyV wrote:

Furthermore, Martin, it takes a lot of nerve to make an accusation of cheating. You are an incredibly nonobservant person. It clearly states that voting is closed to the All Star Winners. The site has so many votes because a lot of people like it and because it was one of the first put up on Stylegala. You look petty and bitter so it is not surprising that you do not link to a site. Get a life.

commentat 16:41 on 14 October 2004, Martin wrote:

Emily,

No need for the character assination.

Addressing your points:

I didn't take credit for the bevel change. I congratulated the designer for making the change.

I made no accusations whatsoever; of course I cannot know who voted and why.

Whoops - made a huge blunder. I was very nonobservant re the closing of votes. My honest apologies for that.

Heh, I have no reason to be bitter. Paid attention to the voting because I was so surprised at how well this site was doing.

Got a life, ta

Though I regret not everyone champions my site it is understandable and I do respect your opinion. Criticism is great when it is constructive. I have been lucky to have my work featured on the majority of sites for which I have immense respect for I receive complimentary messages on a daily basis. I cannot tell you how surprised and honored I am to be featured on Stylegala with such great talent. I can assure Will and Martin there is no conspiracy here. Drop me a note. cheers

Wow. Very cool. Green would have to be one of my favorite colors (as you can tell by ) and it is used just enough here. I feel like I've seen the font used in the header and the navigation somewhere before...

There's really not a whole lot that I would change on this site at all. If only Windows had pretty select boxes, this site would look perfect.
