Review:
The personal portfolio/journal format is becoming increasingly formulaic, with the main column/sidebar layout the obvious starting point for most designers. Whilst Mark Steinruck's site follows this to a certain degree, it seems he's done everything he can to make things feel a little different, and as a result, his finely honed design is very refreshing.
The rich chocolate and caramel palette works a treat, and embellishments such as the animated logo, navigation strip and simple work thumbnails are all sympathetically blended into the design.
Code-wise Mark nails it, although with images turned off a jumbled pile of alt links replace the work thumbnails (on Firefox anyway). Otherwise the markup is lean, and the CSS beautifully executed. In particular, this is a site that reveals it's detail slowly, and thus merits some in-depth investigation.

It rules! Beautiful color, wonderful geometric design. I will come back again and again!
Huh? Haven't I seen this one before?
I'm quite sure I have... If so, why is it entering the Stylegala gallery now?
Hans: Because it probably got submitted now and because somebody from the review team liked it and let it in, while before somebody didn't like it and didn't let it in. :)
It's that simple.
I just really like this one. The colours, the logo, and the layout. Maybe need to add a print css file? The coding is very lean, what can I say?
Great Job!
Breaks up in ie6
Stars aren't centered. Go figure that's my only nitpick. :) Great work Steinruck!
I can't believe the brown colour scheme works so well - I've tried that and failed before so kudos for making it work. If I was in a nitpicking mood I'd say I don't like the orangey-brown backgrounds on the sidebar headings on the work and journal pages but that'd be it. Very nice design.
color sheme works a lot...that's nice...
Yes, very nice design. Not that I'm trying to find something negative to say, but I think I'd like to see the thumbs a little larger on the main page. It seems a little off balance to me. I really like the color choices and layout of the inside pages. Oh, and it appears that your print stylesheet doesn't validate in your contact page. Thought you might want to know that. Again, great work.
Very nicely done. I'm a fan of the crisp small details that go unnoticed at first glance, but really make the site visually interesting. Also like the relief of the blue nav color against the brown. Great job!
I especially love those spanned stripes like sun rays on the header and footer images.
the only nice thing on the website is their logo, the rest is just common stuff.
