Subtraction

Superb - love it. It's great to correct usage of grids and typographic relationships in a CSS design. Gone are the grads and drop shadows - hope they don't come back for a while!

It looks quite a bit like the old version of the site (which isn't a bad thing), with the design fleshed out in the same kind of unique grid style manner. Haven't really made up my mind about the B&W thing though, a bit (but just a bit!) more color might not hurt. But all in all, excellent work. Very inspiring.

once I got deeper though, I felt like I couldn't focus on anything as there was ALOT of text on the page.

Obviously the site was designed for 1024 x 760 or higher as someone with 800 x 600 wouldn't even know there was content below the big picture.

Anyways, its a good site though. Good submission.

I may be a bit biased since this is the type of incarnation that I was aiming for.

I think this design is awesome. Making the homepage different from the subpages makes it feel more welcoming. The navigation is simple, bold and to the point. The designer has created quite a unique top-to-bottom and left-to-right approach to the layout. Bad thing is that it may be a bit distracting also. Another thing I'm not feeling is the width. They might as well had stuck to 800px.

Sorry everyone, but I'm going to jump off the bandwagon and admit that I can't see why this is being received so well *prepares for backlash*.

My first impression was that I was looking at the old "Orange" phone company website, and I agree with Bryan that once you get past the first 3 items, the amount of text (all placed at varying widths and indentations) makes it very confusing to follow.

I agree to a bit with that last comment. While this is a beautifully (and painstakingly) executed example of staunch grid design, I think that it suffers a bit from an organizational haze. Once you get further down the page past the nice elements like pictures that help your eye to break up the information into digestible chunks, you are left with a daunting amount of text. The grid helps, but this site could benefit from some good old design elbow grease like color, contrast, and hierarchy.

Nice selection! I really love the feel and style.

Those of you who are complaining about "too much text"... Are you saying that he should write shorter articles? If you simply don't like reading long texts, you can hardly blame the designer. I mean, the quantity of text is not a design decision, it's an editorial choice.

The implication of such a critique is either that he should write more "bite-sized" articles (which is a writing critique, not design), or that the text layout should be paginated (which is really annoying).

I've started reading his blog regularly now, and each time I read an entry I start by simply admiring the layout for a few seconds.
