Review:
A breath of fresh air.
After digging through heaps of submissions for blogs and business sites, I found this simple little bonsai gallery by Andy "" Rutledge. It's nice to see the principles and techniques that have been refined and redefined on blogs being applied nicely to a site with a completely different purpose.
This little photo gallery has a pleasant, simple design that succeeds at highlighting the content: photos of bonsai trees intended to serve as inspiration to other bonsai artists.
The code validates and is generally well-structured, though it does have some unfortunate quirks, including poor use of non-breaking spaces for padding, some "designy" graphics that should probably have used CSS image replacement, and an obnoxious right-click disabling script.
Despite these faults, however, I generally felt good about this site. It's a good start, and encourage Andy to keep pushing CSS into new places (though perhaps with a bit tighter code next time.)

What for is this stupid "Right Click disabled"-Alert Box??? This stuff is really annoying! Only beginners try that kind of nonsense! If i want to look at the source, i can still get it! This site gets only 1 Point from me for using trash like that, though the design isn't bad ...
Thanks for the review, James. I built this site back when I was just starting to use css layouts and it has a few anachronistic elements. C'est la vie. I may get around to reworking the site one day.
As for the right-click script, it is contextually appropriate. The bonsai community is rather technologically unsophistocated, while at the same time rather unscrupulous when it comes to illegally using copyrighted imagery. While I had exclusive permission to use the images on the site, they do not belong to me and the right-click script is generally a successful deterrent to image misuse in bonsai circles. In this case I make no apologies.
Site gets a 7 from me. Not that interesting a subject to me, but the design is very nice :)
And Seky, go look up the definition of "netiquette", your flaming isn't very useful. We all know how annoying those scripts are, doesn't mean you have to tear Andy a new one, does it?
I think the style fits the subject very well. It is a breeze to browse the little trees, but one thing could even improve the browsing imo: active link-styling. To see what menu is active now.
I think the site is sharp enough but the photos they've supplied are so blown out that it really throws off the balance of the overall design. Shame.
Quite a nice design, and some real nice photography.
However, the site doesn't respond well to an increase in text-size. Some of the text in the main content area overlaps the footer at the bottom at normal font size (About page). The design dictates the content i.e. there is only a set amount of content space available on each page, so the site would break if other menu items or additional content were added.
Apart from that, I think the site does deserve it's place in the gallery.
This site earned itself a 1 from me as well.
While the Bonsai community may be, "unscrupulous" and unsophisticated, so then are you for using a poor javascript method to try and thwart their methods.
There are far more elegant and advanced solutions than javascript. I might suggest you look into mod-rewrite and its redirect methods.
A disabling of right click is not, "contextually appropriate." I would recommend further investigation of that phrase before using it inappropriately again.
damn this place turned nasty. Some people really need to look up "netiquette".
Eric: ad-hominem attacks aren't really appropriate, either...
I don't think he needs to further investigate the phrase Eric. "contextually appropriate". Appropriate in its context.
He didn't use it inappropriately. You just disagree with the statement. If you're going to go to the effort of talking down to people, you should probably focus your ire on the right area.
p.s. The javascript is very irritating. It's really screwing with my mouse gestures.
So then, you claim it as being appropriate? Perhaps if we were back in 1997 and the disabling of right click was, "trendy," it might then be appropriate.
Additions of markup and scripting that serve no purpose other than to thwart theft of images does not serve to further web standards; Especially so when superior methods exist. (i.e. htaccess rewriterules to block said theft)
Sorry, but I dont see why everyones calls this a "great design". In my eyes its just some grayscale-colorcodes as the only design-element, but I guess the code-part is nice, but that does not make it a "great design", my two cents.
The right-click works just fine in my Opera 7.54, btw.
The phrase, Eric. The phrase. Reread what I wrote. He did not use the phrase "contextually appropriate" incorrectly, as you said he did. He does not need "further investigation of that phrase". He used it just fine. It's a disagreement with what is contextually appropriate.
I'm not saying at all that the javascript was a good idea. I say right below my previous point that it irritates me. I do not think that its use is contextually appropriate. But that does not mean that I think that Andy doesn't know what "contextually appropriate" means, as you suggested. We just disagree. Sorry to get pedantic.
You could use .htaccess with referer check to block images stealing, instead of this message. This blocks *whole* menu. It's like loosing your third hand or so.
Third hand? Yes, I do seem to have lost that. I'm getting by with 2, though, quite nicely, and my mouse as well, thank you.
the no right-click script messes with mouse gestures.
for what it's worth, I can right-click beautifully in Opera 7.53, although I can see how it could get irritating in other browsers.
However, I was always under the impression that stylegala is primarily about design, and the design of this site serves it's purpose quite well. It showcases the bonsai trees, and does not distract from the trees' beauty.
However, I also agree that some :active link styling (or some PHP scripting) for the menu would greatly enhance the design and usability.
I dont think so, its not wotrt,,,
nice website indeed.
I really enjoy the clean images. To many sites now a days use sloppy images instead of taking the time to properly format pics or get the proper ones.
He didn't use it inappropriately. You just disagree with the statement. If you're going to go to the effort of talking down to people, you should probably focus your ire on the right area.
so what if he done that ??
This is a very nice design, both, pleasing to the eye and it has very clean code!
The concept is beautiful, but I think that its not quite there yet and there's room for improvement
