My guess is because the human eye follows lines from point a to point b, left to right, and top to bottom. A 90 degree angle forces the eye to stop then start again, but the rounded corner gradually slows down the eye making it easier to change direction. Grammatically, it's like using a period (90 deg) instead of a comma (rounded corner).
