I agree with the point of the web being more functional than aesthetic, but I think his view is a bit over simplified.

Nike has been known for radical ad campaigns and has long established its brand of towards youth. In this case some flamboyant flash serves to re-enforce its brand. A plain, functional site would not appeal to their target audience. The same could be said of many sites in the entertainment industry.

Sometimes you have to think about the real purpose of the site. After all, a client remembers a visually impactful portfolio site more than a plain, but easy to navigate site.

This article absolutely baffled me. I can not see where this guy is coming from at all. Here're a few points that come to mind:

- If a designer 'get's it wrong', whether the graphics are elaborate or not, it is bad design.

- As soon as you make a conscious decision to position an element on a page (be it web, or print etc.) you are making a 'graphic design decision'. This design decision has a knock-on effect on how the page functions.

- Google does win awards: it get's write-ups in some major creative publications! The Amazon logo is one of the most discussed web based branding examples I have come across!

"The Web is, at heart, a task-focused, functional place"

The above can not be fully achieved without great graphic design. You get composition, colour theory, typographical decisions wrong and function goes out the window.

As for your closing paragraph: are you serious?! You must be just saying that as a wind-up!? It is all of those things! That's what makes it

Lunatic. Ok.. go coding an the page will be the best with only function in mind right ?! history has proven us that DON´T; products needs appealing.

"Graphic design is the applied art of arranging image and text to communicate a message, or facilitate understanding. It may be applied in any media, such as print, digital media, motion pictures, animation, product design, packaging, and information signs. Graphic design as a practice can be traced back to the origin of the written word, but only in the late 19th century did it become identified as a separate ent
