Any chance that the reason the dating site mentioned is so popular might be that is free, and not that it is ugly?

I just find it hard to buy the argument. It's completely true that useability reigns over design, but what is more true is that free reigns over NOT free.

Craigslist has been around since BBS's, from what I've read (can't say I've ever actually used the site) - so if it's still kicking, there's gotta be a reason for it, and imdb is easily the most comprehensive movie database I've ever found. Maybe the essay's point should be that the design of a perfectly focused and functional website is a complete non-issue?
