What a free Java means for Rich Internet Applications

The big news today was that Java is going to be released for free under the GPL license. This comes hot off the heals of Adobe's decision to open source their ActionScript Virtual Machine, the core part of the Flash Player. Java has always been free, now the JVM's source code is available under a public license that stops companies from stealing it (unlike the BSD license). Also, just to note, its the JVM's code that is open, the Java language itself is no more or less open than it always was, it is still controlled by a central authority.
