That's a nice trick, I'm sure to come in handy,
yeah, it's actually a very good method for css based rollovers - we've used it on a few sites now, and the idea of JS based rollovers seems ridiculous now ;)
It's a very nice trick in order to lower the request load on the server. Ever taken a look to Stylegala's bullet madness? I guess http headers are almost as 'heavy' as a bullet.
A few month ago, I was looking for a js to translate MIME code embedded in the html page back into graphics... but did not find anything worthy.
It can really increase a server performance when there are lots of graphics to upload.
