I've seem much better issues from ALA..
The Shopping cart article should have lots of pictures and examples. To me it just seems like an introduction to something.
ALA has severely gone down hill for good web-related articles. I mean, an excerpt from a book, I thought ALA was about unpublished, new and exciting PRACTICAL ideas for the community...
I did not read the book excerpt, however i found the article about user-actions quite useful.
