Design a Footer!

My friend Jon has an awesome blog, but a boring footer. Design him a new one, and win a £25 iTunes Music Card!

Prime example as to why the contests from large sites like the bbc and /. are pure evil. They spawn this kind of tripe. Why don't you tell your buddy Jon to be a little more insulting and throw a bag of peanuts at the "winning" designer instead?

It's no surprise these people are trying to get away with this. Any time I meet somebody and they find out what I do for a living, they instantly ask me to take a look at their site for pennies, or whatever they try to throw at me (sometimes nothing), all because we're "buddies" now. In my mind, it's the same as asking a mechanic you just met to rebuild your engine and pay hime with a six pack. Just because the end product we provide can not be physically touched, doesn't mean it has no value.

Very insulting. Bastard.

Also: I am fighting a case in court. I'm looking for a lawyer to represent me. The best defense proposal wins a $25 ITUNES GIFT CARD!!!

Jerk.

I'm going to play devil's advocate with the no-spec work argument.

Tyson's example ... obviously no-one will try to hire a lawyer with a $25 gift card. Why? Because no 'real' lawyer will take up the offer, the general public/trainee lawyer won't take it cos they can't fake the skills that are required, and to the client, it's very obvious the difference between a real and a 'faking it/beginner' lawyer.

With designers ... you have plenty of them who will take on any job to get 'recognition', people can fake being a designer (get 100 wannbe designers submitting an entry and you will probably get an okay design accidentally), and to the clients, many of them can't see any obvious difference between a good and bad design.

The problem isn't people offering spec work - you will never get rid of it (so why waste time railing against it) ... the real problem is that designers have yet to convince the general public that there is any real difference in design.

And just to finish, I don't have a solution - i just feel designers time would be better spent thinking of how to convince the general public of the value of design, rather than convincing people not to run design competitions.

For the record, I'm not a designer, but I hire them for my projects simply cos I do value their skills/work. But I'm obviously in the minority.

I'm with all of the other who take this as a massive insult. This really is a smack in the teeth for all designers.

The thing is that he'll get a footer for his $25 voucher because there are a ton of people who will submit designs to him. Not professionals who make a living from design, but those who want to be designers.

Unlike law (the example above) design has a very low entry barrier (I wonder how many entries will be from cracked versions of photoshop :-/ ) and everyone wants to make their name some how.

I don't see how we can stop this - but I find it seriously bloody insulting.

I'm undecided about the whole spec work thing. If you're a designer, you've got 10 minutes to spare, and u wouldn't mind an iTunes voucher, then do it I say.

I'm a freelance developer, and I make a good living from design.

I've won the odd design comp in the past, but those I've entered have been worth it to ME. I've seen a tonne of spec comps where the amount of work compared to the possible payoff is a joke. But I keep a look out for others which I think are worthwhile - for fun mostly.

One example in their favour is the fact that after i won the last comp I entered (in my spare time) I got a tonne of lucrative flow-on work and my site stats went through the roof, as did my search rankings.

I'll never make these things a priority, and it's rare that I have the time to do them, but I have no problem doing them at all.

I can see arguments both ways, but bottom line - if you're a good designer, you'll get paid what you're worth.
