Symphony21 is free!
When Symphony21 came out, there was a lot of buzz. Now that it's free, I've been playing around with it again - and I'm liking what I'm seeing!

I know this may be "spam", but, I think that Symphony was (is) a really great CMS. It does things a bit different, which, I think, is why it never seemed to become super popular. Who wants to learn XSLT when they don't have to? And the $40 pricetag was sort of high too (in my opinion), when there were perfectly good tools available for free. But, now that Symphony21 is free, I'll be using it. I've installed it locally on my iMac here at home, and I like what I see.
For some helpfull hints and tricks with Symphony, check out http://imaginaxiom.com/ and the Overture Wiki at http://overture21.com/wiki/. That's where I've learned alot these past few days.
Plus, I think that the admin interface is nicely thought out. And, it's nice to look at.
Looks like a well thought out, somewhat different CMS engine. A great way to maybe learn a little XSLT stuff while you're at it. Digging...
Thanks for posting this Matthew.
I had forgotten all about Symphony (probably because of the price tag). Now that it's free I downloaded it to my iBook and have it running locally and it took under a minute to install. I'm going to go play around with it. :)
Joshua - that's exactly why I wanted to post it. I had never really tried it out due to the price tag - but, now that it's free, I have... and I liked it!
Admin interface is nice - if a little too spartan. Without installing it myself, it was difficult to see how things knitted together in the demo because of the natural restrictions placed on a demo user...
I just wrote about Symphony over at PluggedOut too (just doing my bit to spread the word!)
I've always been looking for something with the power of Movable Type (multiple blogs, full customisation etc) but with the looks and usability of WordPress. I think i've just found it.
I think that Symphony has a learning curve that may hurt it in the end. I'm still working on it. But, I think that I'd rather spend time learning a standard system like XSLT than something Wordpress or Moveable Type specific.
it is probably the best CMS out there... I opted to use it for a very large news website and it is much better than anything else we were looking at from larger outfits.
