Job Roundup

Kyle Schembri releases a job listing site for designers and developers. Simple, needs something more, but I like it.

The layout looks nice.

It shows ten job listings 5 in each column, how is it going to show more? With more it would need to be sortable and searchable wouldn't it?

It has a striking resemblance to www.authenticjobs.com, at least in concept not in look. With the exception that the job boards are setup pretty much exactly the same.

I'd have to say IMO he probably ripped Cameron off.

I think its a little far fetched to say that he ripped him off because of the layout similarity. I think its missing a lot of functionality presently though, where is the search field?

Well Chris ... the resemblance to www.authenticjobs.com as far as concept is interesting, although I like the resemblance of www.stayquiet.com as far as look. :)

If you're gonna be unoriginal and steal layouts, colors, ideas ... DON'T spam it around for more people to see and catch that you're stealing. Its just stupid.

Worse than having someone copy your style and layout like this guy did to me, is having him copy it and not realizing how strikingly awful the header looks with a kerning-impaired Helvetica instead of Myriad Pro. If you're going to do it, at least do it properly.

Now, as for the rip itself, the funny thing about all of it is that on the top of my CSS file for stayquiet I included a notice reading "use this file to learn, not copy". I guess he didn't learn much, but he did copy.

wow...I to like the layout resemblance to www.stayquiet.com...wow, he didn't even bother to change the body bg color or headers.

straight rip, on both accounts.

@ fred - I'm assuming you've already sent this guy an email right?

I removed Job Roundup. Fred, contact me if you have a problem.

If you guys don't like it thats fine. No need to get hard feelings here. I'm willing to do whatever is neccessary.

Any comments you can contact me at kyle@schembri.ca. I'm open to questions and apologies.

Sorry you missed my first post here:

"The site resembles fred's site for sure, but only with the header. I sent an email to Fred telling him I would do this, with no reply.

The content, and the coding, are both my own, and thus it cannot be called a rip entirely. By doing so you go a little bit to far.

The header, yes, was taken from Fred's site, and changed to my liking. I felt no wrong doing, with receiving no reply from Fred.

If Fred wants me to take the header down now, I will be happy to change it. Please contact me if you do."

* See my first post, above this, as a reply to this actual one.

I think its funny you would take down your jobs section, but you are still using the same header design as Fred in your portfolio site. Maybe a nice change for tomorrow's reboots? :)

commentat 22:24 on 31 October 2006, Kyle Schembri wrote:

The reason the header is still up on my main page is between me and Fred now. We are handling this issue outside of the public eye and if you have any questions you can ask him or me personally via email. My actions will be taking place after I have resolved everything with Fred.

I certainly do plan to change the header by tommorrow for the Reboot although. Nothing like a good reboot to get things rolling again eh?

what are your plans with job roundup now? also I wanted to let you know your redirect isn't working properly www.jobroundup.com is still functioning however you have mySQL errors, I'm guessing you just disconnected the databases.

there's really no completely original ideas out there anymore, however if you do borrow make it your own change the colors, the layout, the typeface, put your own flavor on it—don't copy it completely.

take a look at this ALA article:

@Chris: Thanks for letting me know about the redirect. I removed jobroundup.com entirely. What I released was a simple version, took me 2 days to create.

I think I will take this back to the drawing board and work on more features. Then I'll release it again under the same name. I think a new style though rather then having my schembri one.

I do have to say I like the name JobRoundup, it works well.

Thanks, I was kind of iffy about it at the starting.
