While we're proposing pipe dream scenarios to make our jobs easier, let's forget about having a single browser -- that'll never happen. Let's instead agree that the general public should be educated on the differences between browsers, and why using one that renders HTML correctly will make our jobs easier.

If users had a clear understanding of how much of a drag it is for us to, you know, do our jobs and make cross-browser compatible sites, I'm sure they would feel terrible and switch to Firefox -- because clearly adding an iehacks.css to your code is too much of a bother for us. All that copying, pasting, making adjustments...

Come on... that's like saying "We would of been better off with only one AOL" [snicker]

What a great idea...one browser (sarcasm)!

Let's have one engine with different body shapes for cars! It will make it easier for part makers and mechanics.

We need more browsers, not less...innovation pushed by competition will ensure better products...it doesn't mean it's easy just better.

Thanks for all the sarcasm. Much appreciated.

I guess one cannot have an interesting debate involving the Stylegala crowd anymore.

When I first came here the community was thriving and I could debate issues like this in an intelligent manner.

This debate isn't pointless at all. It has brought up some interesting points in the comments.

Schuck, what do you suppose brought us graphical browsers verses text: Lynx vs Mosiac. Then CSS and Javascript: Netscape vs IE. Standards and PNG support: FireFox vs. Opera vs. IE (still continuing).

The battle is raging nothing is settled which is what makes all of this interesting because it's new and uncharted. Very little good has been created by committee. W3C has an important role in standarizing, however the innovation will come by companies sparring to win.

The next battle...? Maybe form controls or maybe in the mobile browsers...I'm looking forward to coding to make it all work.
